In this article, we would like you to know about Wall Putty and Water Proofing. Not many of us know about these two words which are commonly spoken in the field of Home painting and construction. Wall Putty is white cement based powder which provides an ideal base for walls and ceilings whereas waterproofing is a process practised to make the object water-resistant and relatively unaffected by water.
In case of wall patches and surface damage, putty will be applied before painting however it does not reduce the consumption of paint. Putty applications do make the wall smoother but this has more relevance with exterior painting.
Precautions recommended for Cement Wall Putty
- Before applying putty, surface should be moist and proper curing of surface is a must
- It is recommended to go for one coat as the second and third coat will make the surface super smoother which is detrimental for exterior paint.
- If you are using white cement putty then it has to be painted within a week. A delay will lead to a lot of cracks
- If Putty applied left unpainted for more than 20 days then thoroughly sand the surface with Emery paper.
Very often, wall putty is used as a synonym for Water proofing. Wall putty does make the walls water resistant but water proofing is a different science.
Myth 1 – Putty needs to be used for water proofing
Fact -Putty comes with a limited protection against water proofing because it is only a film between the plaster and the paint
Myth 2 – Water leakage happens only through upper floor
Fact -Water also flows by capillary effect and can penetrate from lower floor to create paint peeling
Myth 3 -Water proofing cause breakage of flooring
Fact -Incorrect application of tiles or improper base can lead to uprooting, breakage or puffing of floors.
