Holi is a festival of joy and colours wherein people follow the tradition of smearing colour onto the
faces of their family and friends, playfully. While playing with colours is the spirit of the festival and
is what breathes in life to the occasion, it can be at times very unsafe, in case you do not take
necessary precautions. This is because these days, the colours available for Holi are made of harmful
chemicals, which may prove to be hazardous if not used properly. Therefore, it is important that one
takes safety measures to ensure a joyous and colourful Holi.
Following are some safety tips for Holi.
1. Wear full-sleeved clothes and leggings that cover your legs completely, so that your sensitive
body parts are not exposed to the harmful chemicals of the colours of Holi.
2. Since it is almost impossible to save face from attack of colours, so while being attacked, keep
your eyes and lips tightly closed. Also remember the same while attacking others. If colours
get into your eyes or mouth, rinse off immediately.
3. If you are playing Holi, apply a thick layer of coconut/olive/almond oil on your body and hair
until they glisten and you become slippery. The oily coat would protect you from the
immediate effect of harmful chemicals of the colours. This will not only help in escaping
from the overexcited mob attack, but also will help you to wash off colours easily, later on.
4. While washing off the colour from your face, use lukewarm water and keep your eyes and
lips tightly closed.
5. If you are travelling on Holi, keep the car windows tightly shut.
6. Do not make use of harmful colours for Holi especially “abeer” as it has flakes of mica. This
will not only prove harmful to your playmates, but also spoil your Holi. Instead, make use of
herbal colours for the festival that are easily available in the market. You may also make
herbal colours at home. For instance, red sandalwood powder can be used to make red
colour; henna powder can be put in best use to derive the bright green colour, while yellow
colour can be made by making use of turmeric powder.
7. Avoid and discourage others to use things like eggs, mud, tar or gutter water. Never turn a
blind eye to such unclean ways of celebration especially where children are concerned.
Our responsibility:
While playing Holi, we should not forget about our responsibilities towards the society and
cleanliness. Avoid throwing colours on dogs, cats and cows. Colours can harm anyone! Public
properties and area where you play should not incur damages. This will lose the essence of the
festival. If you are under the influence of alcohol or similar drinks, please refrain yourself from
driving. Children should be discouraged from taking intoxicating beverages and sweets. Overall, Holi
revelry should be contained within decent limits.
