Things you need to DO before your Mehendi application
- Select a Mehendi Artist well in advance. Every artist has a different style. Ask them for catalogues of their previously done work, and pick the one that appeals the most to you.
- Get waxing, mani, and pedi done before mehendi. Waxing later can lighten the colour as it removes the top layer of skin. The nail polish remover used in mani pedi can also lighten it.
- Ask your artist about the ingredients that will be used in mehendi. If you have sensitive skin, discuss this with the artist beforehand. You don’t want to end up with red and itchy hands on your big day.
- Schedule the ceremony 24-48 hours before the wedding to ensure rich colour.
- Complete all your tasks for the day and eat something before the ceremony. Wear loose and comfortable clothing.
- Ask your artist about the things required like a rag or newspaper. Keep everything available before the beginning of ceremony to avoid the break in flow of mehendi application.
- Wash your hands and feet with soap and water to get rid of moisture and oiliness.
- Choose comfy seating with enough pillows, and a water jug with straw nearby. You have to sit still for a long time, ensure that you remain comfortable through it to avoid body aches later.
Things you need to DO after your Mehendi application
- After applying mehendi, let it dry slowly. The longer it stays, the more it gets absorbed into the skin, and darker the colour it brings.
- When the mehendi begins to dry, take solution of sugar and lemon juice, and dab it on your hands and feet with a cotton ball. It will keep the mehendi stuck to the skin, enhancing the absorption. You can repeat this twice.
- You can heat a few cloves in a pan and put your hands above it to allow the steam in. It is known to deepen the colour.
- After it’s dry, scrape it off and avoid the water for at least 12 hours. Apply balm over your hands and feet, and wrap them up with a cling film or plastic while going to sleep, or performing other activities.
Things you DON’T need to do during your Mehendi
- Don’t schedule any other event or activities on the day of your mehendi. You will be exhausted with sitting still while your mehendi dries, you don’t want other to get ready for other activities again.
- Don’t sit under the sun, or in front of an air conditioner. It will dry your mehendi faster, giving it lesser time to get absorbed into the skin.
- Don’t apply moisturizer or an oily soap on your hands before applying mehendi. They act as a barrier and reduce the absorption capacity.
- It is your Mehendi ceremony and everyone is dancing and having fun. You want to do it too, but you need to be careful while the mehendi is wet. Don’t move your arms and feet much, and make sure your fingers don’t come in contact with one another, it may smudge the mehendi and ruin the design. To avoid this situation, you can start your mehendi application a while before the actual ceremony starts, that way your mehendi dries before all the fun begins, and you can be a part of it too!
- Don’t call the photographers in the beginning of the ceremony. Photographers may be covering 3-4 hours of the Mehendi ceremony, and if they start in the beginning, their time duration could get over before the ceremony end. The best mehendi pictures need to be taken towards the end of the ceremony to capture all the beautifully decorated hands. You can call the photographers about halfway into the ceremony.
