Yes, on this Second International Yoga Day there is a sheer necessity to know the true essence of Yoga. It seems to be a joke to so called educated and modern generation. It has been propagated as some leg twisting and head shaking activity confined only to old and boring people. Yoga is not bending your body but it’s the most distant tool to enhance the human capability to keep the body and mind functioning at its highest peak.
The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ which means to unite. It’s the unison of an individual with cosmos or universal spirit. It is a technology or tool to achieve the ultimate goal of one’s life; Salvation. We find the word Yoga mentioned in the oldest holy texts, Rig Veda and over 5000 years ago, Yoga was developed by the Indus Saraswathi civilization in northern part of India. The saints and Brahmins have documented their practices and learning’s in the form of Upanishads where in through rituals, Yoga was thought as the power to attain self -knowledge and wisdom.
Later on, Yogic practice took a systematic form defined as Patanjali Yogic sutras. These sutras were written somewhere in the second century describes the path of Raja yoga and Patanjali, who is considered as the Father of Yoga has classified these yogic practices into eight sutras containing the steps and stages towards Samadhi or enlightenment.
Among the 8 yoga sutras, just one sutra is dedicated to Asanas. Patanajali says, “Sthiram Sukham Aasanam” meaning a posture that is comfortable to you is Asana. Asana is a preparatory step to get your body and mind prepared for the next level of yogic practice but today only the Asana is been propagated as the whole of Yoga.
“When you fine-tune yourself to a point where everything functions so beautifully within you, the best of your abilities will naturally flow out of you” – Sadhguru
There are many Asanas and each Asana will benefit you in different ways. Starting with Nadi Shuddhi & Surya Namaskara, Asana sutra prepares your body and mind for the higher level of yogic practice.
Yoga is a beautiful technology that every mankind must make use of it. Initiate the learning from the trained Yogis to experience the ultimate bliss of life. Let’s unite with the infinite.
